Police officers fatally shot family dogs Monday that were attacking a 10-year-old boy at a Middlesex County motel, investigators said.
The Sayreville Police Department received a 911 distress call at 11:20 a.m. from one of the boy’s family members who told them the dogs were attacking the child at the Kings Inn in the borough, according to a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
When the officers arrived, they saw the boy being attacked and the officers opened fire on the animals, the office said.
One of the officers was injured after one of the bullets ricocheted and struck the responder, officials said.
The boy and the officer were both taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where they were listed in stable condition, prosecutors said.
The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to call Detective Stephanie Redline of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3316.
